Brave "Will O' the Wisps"

THE LORE
WILL O’ THE WISPS

Travelers—particularly those who venture out after sunset on unfamiliar pathways—beware of the will o’ the wisps.

It is said—though by whom is a bit of a mystery—that on certain days for certain travelers in certain parts of the world, little lights dance on the horizon, whispering tempting invitations… pledging the answers to lifelong questions, the realization of dreams, a key to secret treasures—a change of fate.

Charmed and curious, unsuspecting travelers follow the floating lights, mesmerized by their whispers, their promises. Yet no matter how long or how fervently they follow, they never quite touch the beautiful beacons whose flickering lights eventually fade and disappear… leaving the inquisitors, the dreamers and the treasure seekers lost… and alone.
* * *

In “Brave,” Merida spies tiny blue lights after escaping into the forest in search of a change of fate. Forming a path that dares her to follow, the lights lead Merida to a mysterious location that holds the power to change her destiny—just not in the way she imagines.

“The will o’ the wisps are in a lot of Scottish folktales,” says “Brave” director Mark Andrews. “They were said to lead you to treasure or doom—to change your fate—but they’re an actual phenomenon of swamp and bog gas seeping up through the earth and interacting with the natural resources to create the blue flames. People would follow these lights thinking they were little fairies, and basically drown or get sucked down into the bogs.

“We made the wisps like actual little spirits,” Andrews continues. “They’re almost like Marley’s ghost in a way, because Marley’s ghost isn’t an evil spirit—even though he’s frightening, he’s trying to warn Ebenezer to change his ways. That’s what the wisps are doing. There’s a duality to them, because they’re either good or evil—they lead Merida into more and more trouble, but in the end, they’ve led her exactly where she needs to go.”

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources—including her mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar h or. Opens on June 22, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Sponsor Spotlight Heelys

Sponsor Spotlight ::    Heelys ::  Ashley's1stbdaybash

I  worked near a high school and saw a teenage boy roll by me and I had to do a double take. When I looked down, I saw he was wearing a sneaker and it had wheels. I was surprised. The next day at the mall, I saw a group of kids with the same sneakers and I asked them what they were and was told "Heelys".

This new concept "Heelys" was totally different from the quad skates I had as a kid and later the inline skates.  I could wear my favorite sneakers and also skate with them too.  Awesome!

I was thrilled when I had a chance to review a pair and my son picked out the 7800 Bolt 2 wheel sneaker in White/Black/Blue/Silver.  Aidan's face lite up when he opened the box and saw that the sneakers light up on the side.

Heelys are not exclusively for kids. They also have a line for adults. With many styles and wheel color options, the only issue will be which one to buy. Besides the skates Heelys also carries the Nano Inline Footboard.

Launch Event for #ReadingRainbow App

Who doesn't remember watching Reading Rainbow on PBS as a child? I know I do. I loved reading and learning about different places and things. When the show went off the air was was sad. The show is back but now in the digital age.

LeVar Burton Reading Rainbow App Launch

Different Kingdoms

I was so excited when I was invited to the Reading Rainbow App launch event.  Just like the television show the app is geared towards children ages 3 to 9. The app launches in a hot air balloon and you travel to places such as the Animal Kingdom, Genius Academy, My Friends My Family and more. When you chose Animal Kingdom you are shown books related to animals.

Can check out 5 books @ a time
For Parents

Kids are able to take out 5 books at a time in there backpack. Once you are done you simply do a book return and are able to take out another one. For parents, the app lets you know what your child's reading progress.  This is my FAVORITE feature.  You can also receive emails giving you questions to ask your children about the books they have read. The app features a read along (narrated) book.  The app is very interactive with videos and more.

LeVar Burton and me

In the Questions and Answers, I asked if the app was going to be available in other languages and was told it will be forthcoming within the year. The app will be free so you can sample one book. If you choose a 2nd book the app will cost $9.99 a month but for 6 months it will be $24.99. (This is an approximation.) The official launch for the app is tomorrow. For multiple family members a family plan will be forthcoming as well.

My favorite part of the event was hearing  a snip-bit of "Butterflies in the Skies" song and the delicious cake made from the Cake Boss.

Sponsor Spotlight Giggle Gang Plush Toy Review

Spotlight :: Fisher-Price :: #Ashley's1stbdaybash

Fisher-Price has done it again. They have come out with a new toy collection called the Giggle Gang. They are the cutest toys. I received the yellow, "Goldie" one and  "Fuzzy" the orange one. I have to say my daughter loves her new toys.

The Giggle Gang Plush Toy (Retails $12.99) are for children 6 months of age and older. It comes with 2 AA batteries and is machine washable. Just remove the sound box compartment in that back which has a velcro zipper.

When I received it, I gave it to my daughter, Ashley, to play. She started giggling right along with the toy. The cutest sight and giggles to my ears. She would touch its belly and it would start all over again laughing.  The Giggle Gang each have distinctive laughing sounds.

This product helps your children with sight, sound and touch. Each plush toy has different textures and sounds. The toys giggling helps your baby with cause and effect. Ashley kept touching its belly knowing that when she did the toy would giggle. The toy helps foster a sense of humor. Being silly at this age is alright.

New York Aquarium A-MAZE-ING Water opens to the public on June 8, 2012

Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium Opens New 1,500-Square-Foot Exhibit On World Oceans Day

Interactive exhibit will immerse visitors in the world of water conservation.

Maze includes watershed environments, rivers, lakes, oceans and environmental threats.

Weekend programming includes art exhibits, hands-on activities and much more.

A-MAZE-ING Water will feature elements of the New York Seascape, the aquarium’s conservation program that works to preserve local NY waters.

Exhibit will be open through September 9th

Brooklyn, N.Y. – May X, 2012 – The Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium will open a new summer exhibit,  A-MAZE-ING Water as  part of the  celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8, 2012. The event and exhibit will run through September 9.

The program will feature Water’s Extreme Journey, where visitors will travel through a 1,500-square-foot maze, learning about the environmental threats that plague our waterways along their way to an ocean-themed destination.

Water’s Extreme Journey interactive maze will be located under the pavilion tent at the aquarium. Children will be engaged with a range of interactive experiences as they ride a zipline through pollutants, put together water cycle puzzles, spin a wildlife wheel of facts and learn the importance of water. Educational messaging helps visitors to become caring, informed stewards of our local and global waterways and the wildlife that depends on them.  Guests will also learn about the aquarium’s New York Seascape, a conservation program designed to restore healthy populations of local marine species—many of them threatened—and to protect New York marine waters.

Water’s Extreme Journey exhibit will be open daily.  A-MAZE-ING Water  will also feature special hands-on activities that will take place on weekends only and include:

  • Take Action Mailbox Station – Visitors can act immediately on their concerns based upon what they just experienced in the maze and appeal to local legislators to support clean water initiatives.  This area gives them the opportunity to voice their concerns by writing a letter, drawing a picture, or making a collage. Letters and art will be delivered to local government officials.
  • Giant Community Mosaic –Using imagination, visitors can create more than 600 mosaic tiles that combine to make a large-scale work of art.  The Wyland-designed mosaic reinforces the power of community coming together for a common goal.
  • Model of Local Watershed – A model of a typical watershed will give visitors a chance to see how pollutants turn into run-off that affects drinking water and impacts the health of our oceans.
  • New York Seascape Interactive– Visitors will explore the New York Bight and discover the remarkable diversity of marine life that lives in local waters (330 species of marine fish, 26 species of sharks and four species of sea turtles) through an interactive game.
  • Water-themed Art Exhibition: The aquarium’s Ocean View Room will be transformed into The Conservation Gallery  and feature multi-media artists who will display their works from a variety of mediums. All works of art will celebrate the importance, vitality, and beauty of water.

WCS’s expansive Global Marine Program conducts conservation efforts in 20 countries and all four oceans to help save threatened and endangered species. Most recently, WCS launched the New York Seascape, a local conservation program part of WCS’s A SEA CHANGE initiative, a 10-year plan to revitalize the aquarium and ignite the rebirth of Coney Island. An additional component to A SEA CHANGE includes construction of the Ocean Wonders: Sharks! exhibit, scheduled to break ground later this year.

My Visit to the Bronx Zoo

Last Saturday my family and I went to visit the Bronx Zoo. We all had a blast. There were so many things to do. Even my husband got in on some of  fun. We were here all day but with so many things to see we will be making another trip soon to see the gorillas and reptiles. Here are a couple of picture of our trip to zoo.

My husband, Rod,and my son, Aidan

After the giraffes we went to see Dora & Diego's 4D Adventure movie.  We could not pass go until we saw it. My kids are big time Dora and Diego fans.

After seeing him my son was excited about seeing the Butterfly Garden.  We saw the most beautiful butterflies and cocoons.

Beautiful

After the butterflies, we had to take some picture of how we would look like if we were butterflies.

Aidan as a butterfly

Yup that is me

You can see the animals right next to you in the tube

After this my husband and son went down a slide at the children's zoo.  Everything started to fall out of his pockets on his way down the slide.  FYI give your wife the stuff in your pockets before you attempt the slide.

My favorite picture was the one below with the peacock.  It opened its feather and started to vibrate trying to get the other female's attention. So cool
and such a beautiful sight to see.
