DIY: Home Decorating Ideas

I have been a little busy at home with painting and back to school.  A month ago our apartment was painted.  I do not have before pictures of what my apartment looked like as we had to take all of the curtains and frames off the walls.  Which started me thinking about decorating my apartment with new inexpensive things.

The process when living in a building is you call the office to set up an appointment for the painting. We had to get the entire apartment ready for the painters to paint.  Yes, it meant everything had to be pushed into the middle of each room and all the frames, nails etc off too.

My inspiration came from a placemat for my table. It is the damask style (black & white) which I love and cost only $1 at Deals Store.  I purchased 4 of them for my table to redecorate my apartment. This design is elegant.  Sometimes you see the damask design with a Fleur De Lis.

This was just the start of my DIY decorating.  I searched online for window curtains that were inexpensive.  It was more of a hunt at one point as there are so many damask (black & white) curtains to choose from.  The price ranges were surprising for this theme.  Some prices represented high-end designers.  I went with one that I saw online at  Walmart.com for $13.97.  I ordered 2 sets of them.  Love how they looked online and with my newly painted walls this would add that new vibe I was going for.

This damask theme curtain was just what I was looking for as it added that pop of elegance.  The damask black and white does not necessarily look exactly like my placemats but it is on that theme that I love.  I earned a free $5 gift card to Walmart via Crowdtap.  It's a cool site that you answer multiple choice questions and at the end of the month, you could get a free gift card reward and also a chance to sample free products. I applied for my gift card and lowered my purchase. This decorating idea came from a simple placemat that I saw in my local Deals store.  At $1 for each place-mat, this was what drove me into my damask theme in my home.  You will see additional blog post of how I carried this theme into other areas inside my home.

  1. you have good taste in decor. I like the ideas you came up with and a new flair with the curtains certainly makes the apartment look more stylish. Glad that they weren't too expensive to purchase, so then you won't feel bad about changing them out once you grow tired of the style

  3. The black and white damask curtains really add a pop of elegance to your newly painted walls. I always dread having to remove everything off the walls to paint, but it's so worth it in the end.

  8. That was really cool. Funny how one little item can inspire you to do bigger things! I am currently shopping around for new curtains for my two sons' bedrooms. I might find a damask design for them too.

  14. Apartments are tough because you are limited in what you can do to the place. I love that you used curtains to get the look and feel that you were hoping for in your home.

  15. I could only imagine how tough it was to get the room ready for painters. Where we live you usually paint it yourself and do it at your convenience. Having to do it when the painters can come seems really tough. Glad you were able to do it though.
