What parent hasn't heard they're kids say to them "Are we there yet?" I know I have many times. I decided to play a game with my kids that taught them about the 50 states via license plates.
My son was having trouble remembering his states. One day while driving, I was stopped at a red light and noticed the license plate in front of me was from Florida. As I proceed through the intersection, I saw another one from Connecticut and it clicked. Now it has become a fun thing that my son and I play while driving to grandma, the mall, or school. Each plate is different for each states. I then downloaded a U.S.A. map of the 50 states. Now we cross off each state plate that we see.
Counting the license plates from various states we see. Counting is important as it helps kids know there numbers. One day my son and I counted 18 license plates from Florida alone. Even my 4 yr old has started to look for the plates and called out Florida 2 times. To date that is the highest number that we have counted from all the plates seen. The next day we start all over again each day. It is a fun activity that teaches my kids about the 50 states as well as counting.
I get my kids to identify the colors of the cars we see when looking at the plates and counting. We can see a blue, red, green car and then tally how many of them we see in the day. Again, the tally starts all over again the next day. This teaches kids about colors, counting and about the 50 states.
Now that my daughter has started Pre-k I am told she can count up to 20, knows her colors and even some states. It is fun activities to do with your kids that teaches them and its FREE. You too can try this with your family. Share this with your friends and family. Leave me a comment with your thoughts.
